As being the biggest among the sixty cisterns that were built in Istanbul, Yerebatan cistern was constructed during the Byzantine Period and is located just across from Hagia Sophia Museum. In ancient Byzantine times, cisterns were important storage places of water the aid of which was resorted due to the shortage of the drinking water. Previosly the water was carried by the ducts, but the successive enemy attacts led to the demolition of these ducts and resulted in their being superceded by cisterns.
Particularly the water stored in the yerebatan cistern was delivered through the Valens Aquaduct . It was used until the 16th century. The cistern which was in use for a short period of time during the Ottoman Peiod, was restored in the mid 19th century. The total water capacity of the cistern is 80.000m3 and its height is 8 m. And has around 10.000m2 surface area. Today ciistern is open to public visit. Certain scenes of the James Bond movie ‘From Russia with Love’ was filmed in Yerebatan Cistern. |
