Hagia Sophia which was acknowledged to be the greatest and the most sacred piece of the city during the Byzantine Age, is today converted into a museum by which the visitors are enthralled with its magnitute and the splendor. Despite the new techniques and inventions in architecture that were attained within the 800 years period that stretch from the Byzantine Empire to the Ottoman Empire, no any other building could achieve to outlive the Hagia Sophia. Having been used as a church for 916 years, Hagia Sophia then was used as a mosque for 481 years. Finally in February 1935 after an extended restoration that was conducted with the instruction of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the building was opened to visitors as a museum and eventually became the most third visited museum in Turkey. |
